Differential (mechanical device)

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A differential is a specialized gear train featuring three drive shafts. It possesses a unique mathematical property regarding motion. The rotational speed of any one shaft is the average of the speeds of the other two shafts.

This mechanism is essential for transferring power while allowing for variations in speed. It is widely used in motor vehicles, clocks, and even historical analogue computers. By managing these different speeds, the device solves complex mechanical problems in many different systems.

In motor vehicles, the differential is vital for smooth cornering. When a vehicle turns, the outer wheels must travel a longer distance than the inner wheels. This occurs because the outer wheels follow a larger radius during the turn.

Without a differential, the wheels would be forced to spin at the same rate. This would cause struggle or wheel slip. A differential allows the engine's power to reach both wheels while letting them rotate at different speeds. This ensures the vehicle can navigate curves effectively without losing traction or stability.

There are several ways to design these mechanical systems. A common ring-and-pinion design is used in rear-wheel drive vehicles. In this setup, a pinion gear connected to the transmission drives a large ring gear.

This design performs two tasks at once. It changes the axis of rotation by 90 degrees and provides a reduction in the gear ratio. Another option is the epicyclic design. This uses epicyclic gearing to send specific proportions of torque to both the front and rear axles.

This design is valued because it is relatively compact in width.

Another variation is the spur-gear differential. This version uses equal-sized spur gears at each end of the device.

A rotating carrier provides the input torque to the system. Inside the carrier, pinion pairs rotate freely on supported pins. These pinions mesh with the spur gears to connect them. This allows the relationship between the input carrier and the output shafts to remain consistent. The Oldsmobile Toronado is an example of a car that uses this specific design.

Specialized versions of the differential exist for difficult driving conditions. A standard "open" differential has a weakness regarding traction. If one wheel has very little grip, the device may send most of the power to that spinning wheel. This leaves the wheel with more grip with very little power to move the car.

To solve this, engineers created limited-slip differentials. These designs limit the difference in power sent to each wheel. For even more control, off-road vehicles use locking differentials. These can effectively lock both wheels together to turn in unison, regardless of the surface grip.

History shows that humans have used differential principles for centuries. Some researchers believe the Antikythera mechanism from roughly 100 BC to 70 BC used a differential.

This ancient device helped determine the phase of the Moon. In 1720, Joseph Williamson created an equation clock using a differential. This allowed the clock to show solar time by adding the equation of time to local mean time. In the 1800s, Onésiphore Pecqueur patented a differential for steam wagons in 1827. Later, James Starley invented a chain-drive version for bicycles in 1876.

Beyond transportation, differentials serve advanced computational and scientific roles. In the 20th century, large assemblies of differentials functioned as analogue computers.

These machines performed arithmetic, such as addition and subtraction, to calculate values like gun aiming directions. Even space exploration relies on this technology. The Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity used differential gears in their rocker-bogie suspensions.

These gears helped keep the rover bodies balanced while driving over uneven Martian terrain. This demonstrates how a single mechanical concept can bridge ancient history and modern space science.
