A difference engine is an automatic mechanical calculator.

It was designed to create math tables using a method called finite differences. This method uses a small set of numbers to find new values in a pattern. Many important math functions used in science and navigation can be turned into these patterns. This means the machine can compute many useful tables for engineers. These tables help people understand complex math without doing every step by hand.

The machine works by using many different columns. Each column can store one decimal number. To start the work, you must set initial values in the columns. Column 1 shows the value of the calculation as it happens. Column 2 is set using a special value from the math pattern. The machine then adds the value of one column to the next column. This way of working allows the machine to find new numbers automatically. You power the machine by turning a hand crank.

Charles Babbage began designing these machines in the 1820s. He announced his invention in June 1822 to a scientific group in London. The British government wanted to help him because making math tables was very expensive. In 1823, they gave Babbage £1700 to start his work. However, making the metal parts was a very hard job back then. The metalworking tools could not make the tiny parts with enough precision. Because of this, the big project was eventually stopped by the government.

Babbage had many different ideas for his machines. His plan for Difference Engine No. 1 was huge. It would have had 25,000 parts and weighed 4 tons. He also designed an improved version called Difference Engine No. 2. This newer design could work with 31-digit numbers.

Other inventors like Per Georg Scheutz also built machines. In 1857, his machine became the first printing calculator ever sold. It was sent to the Dudley Observatory in New York.

In the 1980s, experts used Babbage's old drawings to build a working engine. The machine at the Science Museum in London has 8,000 parts. It weighs about 5 tons. This machine even has a printer to show the results. Babbage wanted the printer to make plates for printing presses. This was to stop mistakes that happened when people wrote numbers down by hand. Now, these machines help us see his great ideas in action.
