A difference engine is a mechanical calculator.

It was designed by Charles Babbage in the 1820s. This machine uses a special math method. We call this the method of finite differences. It helps the machine make math tables. These tables are used in science and for travel.

The engine works using many columns. Each column holds one decimal number. To start, you set initial values in the columns. Then, you turn a handle to power the machine. The machine adds values from one column to the next. This set of steps makes the math happen automatically.

Babbage's big design was very complex. One version would have 25,000 parts. It would weigh 4 tons. In the 1880s, people built working models from his plans. One model at the Science Museum has 8,000 parts. It weighs about 5 tons.

These machines show that Babbage's ideas really worked. They can even print the math results. This helps prevent mistakes made by people when they write numbers down.
