It was directed by John McTiernan and written by Jeb Stuart and Steven E. de Souza. The movie is an adaptation of the 1979 novel Nothing Lasts Forever by Roderick Thorp. The story follows John McClane, a detective from the New York City Police Department. While visiting his estranged wife, Holly, in Los Angeles, he becomes trapped in a skyscraper. A group of criminals seizes the building during a Christmas Eve party.

The film is celebrated for revitalizing the action genre through its unique protagonist.

The plot centers on a high-stakes criminal heist disguised as a terrorist attack. Hans Gruber, a German ex-radical, leads a heavily armed team to take over Nakatomi Plaza. The group's true goal is to steal $640 million in untraceable bearer bonds from the building's vault. Gruber uses the chaos to hold hostages, including McClane's wife, Holly. McClane must navigate the building alone to stop the group. He uses various tools, including recovered C-4 explosives and a service pistol, to fight back.

The tension builds as the criminals attempt to blow the roof to cover their tracks.

The film features several distinct character roles that drive the conflict. Bruce Willis plays John McClane, a vulnerable and fallible hero. This was a major departure from the invincible, muscle-bound heroes common in 1980s cinema. Alan Rickman portrays the charismatic and ruthless villain, Hans Gruber. Other key figures include Sergeant Al Powell of the LAPD, who assists McClane from the outside. The criminals also include henchmen like Karl and Theo, who provide physical threats to the hero.

These characters create a complex web of motivations and dangers.

Development of the film began in 1987 when Jeb Stuart was hired by 20th Century Fox. He was tasked with adapting Thorp's novel into a summer blockbuster. Stuart worked intense 18-hour days to complete his first draft in just six weeks. He drew inspiration from a personal experience to ground the story in themes of marital reconciliation. He chose the name "McClane" because it was a strong Scottish name.

The production moved from the page to the screen under the direction of McTiernan.

Production for the film took place between November 1987 and March 1988. The budget for the movie ranged from $25 million to $35 million. Most of the filming occurred on location at the actual Fox Plaza in Los Angeles.

While many famous actors turned down the lead role, Bruce Willis was cast for $5 million. This high salary caused controversy among industry professionals before the release. Despite low initial expectations, the film became a massive commercial success. It grossed approximately $140 million at the box office.

This made it the highest-grossing action film of its year.

Die Hard has had a profound impact on film history and culture. It earned four Academy Award nominations and turned its stars into major celebrities. The film's success led to a large franchise, including sequels like Die Hard 2 and Live Free or Die Hard. The term "Die Hard" even became shorthand for plots involving overwhelming odds in a restricted setting. Critics often debate its status as a Christmas film due to its holiday setting. It is now widely regarded as one of the greatest action movies ever produced.

Beyond entertainment, the film is studied for its deeper thematic layers. Analysts have examined its depictions of masculinity, gender roles, and American anxieties regarding foreign influence. It also explores themes of vengeance and personal redemption. Because of its significant cultural and aesthetic impact, the United States Library of Congress selected it for preservation. In 2017, it was added to the National Film Registry. This recognition confirms its lasting importance to the history of American cinema.
