It is loved for its exciting story and its unique hero. Instead of a hero who is perfect and strong, the main character is a real person. He feels fear and gets hurt during the story. This made the film feel very different from other movies at that time. Many people now call it one of the greatest action films ever made.

McClane must find a way to stop them while trapped inside.

Writing this movie was a big job for Jeb Stuart. He was hired by 20th Century Fox in 1987 to adapt a book. The book was called Nothing Lasts Forever by Roderick Thorp. Stuart worked very hard, sometimes for 18 hours a day. He wanted the story to be about a man trying to fix his relationship with his wife. He chose the name McClane because it sounded strong.
