The main story follows a nurse named Claire Randall. She uses time travel to go to 18th-century Scotland. There, she meets a man named James Fraser. Gabaldon first got the idea for this setting from a TV show called Doctor Who. She saw a character named Jamie McCrimmon and felt inspired. To make the story work, she gave Claire a modern way of thinking. This helps explain why she acts differently in the past. Gabaldon did her research the old-fashioned way by using books.
