A man named August Hoffmann von Fallersleben wrote the words in 1841. He wrote them while on an island in the North Sea. He wanted a united Germany. At that time, Germany was split into many small states.

He used a famous tune by Joseph Haydn. This music was made in 1797. It was first an anthem for an Austrian emperor.

Later, the song became the official anthem for Germany in 1922.

Today, things are different. People only sing the third verse of the song. This verse speaks of "Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit." This means unity, justice, and freedom.

These words are very important to the country. You can see them on German coins. You can even find them on army belt buckles.

The first part of the song is not sung today. This is because it was used by the Nazi regime. People avoid it now to show respect. The third verse remains a symbol of hope and togetherness.
