Deodorant

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Deodorants help people manage body odor. This odor happens when bacteria on the skin break down perspiration, which is another word for sweat. People often use these products in areas like the armpits, groin, or feet. There is also a special kind called an antiperspirant. These products work by blocking the sweat glands so that sweat does not come out at all.

To understand how it works, we must look at how the body sweats. Humans have two main types of sweat glands. Eccrine glands cover much of the skin and make watery sweat that has no smell. Apocrine glands are in the armpits and groin and make a thicker, oily sweat. This oily sweat contains proteins and fatty acids. Tiny living things called bacteria eat these parts of the sweat. When the bacteria eat, they release waste. This waste is what creates body odor.

History shows us how these products changed over time. An inventor named Edna Murphey lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In the late nineteenth century, she patented the first commercial deodorant called Mum. Later, on January 28, 1941, Jules Montenier patented a modern antiperspirant formula. This formula was used in a spray called Stopette. Time magazine called Stopette the best-selling deodorant of the early 1950s.

Many different types of products exist today. Some deodorants use alcohol to kill bacteria or perfumes to mask smells. Antiperspirants often use aluminum compounds to stop sweat. These aluminum salts react with sweat to form a tiny gel plug. This plug blocks the sweat gland so liquid cannot reach the skin. In the 1960s, Gillette released Right Guard, which was an aerosol spray. Aerosols became very popular because they did not touch the skin directly.

Using these products is a common part of daily life. By 1957, about 50% of men were using deodorants. Many people use sticks, sprays, or creams to stay fresh. Some people even use natural crystals made of potassium alum. These crystals work by stopping the bacteria from acting on the sweat. Even though people have used these for a long time, scientists still study them. They want to make sure all ingredients are safe for everyone to use.
