Dental avulsion

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A tooth can sometimes be knocked completely out of its socket. This event is called dental avulsion. It often happens because of an injury, like a fall or a sports accident.

A tooth stays in the jaw because of the periodontal ligament. This is a group of tiny parts that connect the tooth to the bone. When a tooth is knocked out, this ligament becomes torn.

How a tooth is saved depends on how it is handled. For permanent teeth, the best goal is replantation. This means putting the tooth back into its original socket. Doctors say doing this within 15 minutes is best. This is because the cells in the periodontal ligament are still alive and healthy.

If you cannot reach a dentist immediately, you can store the tooth in cold milk or saliva. This helps keep the cells in a good environment.

There is a very important rule for different types of teeth. You should never replant a baby tooth, also called a deciduous tooth. Replanting these can damage the permanent tooth germ growing underneath. This can cause problems like tooth discoloration or even change how the new tooth grows.

Because of this, doctors treat baby teeth differently than adult teeth. They focus on keeping the area clean and healthy instead of putting the tooth back.

When handling a knocked-out tooth, you must be very gentle. Always pick up the tooth by the enamel on the crown. Do not touch or scrub the root area. The root has very delicate cells that can be crushed by finger pressure.

If the tooth is dirty, you should only rinse it gently with saline. Saline is a special salt water used to clean things safely. You should not use hard surfaces like glass or cardboard to carry the tooth. These can crush the cells or cause the storage liquid to spill.

Many people try to prevent these injuries by wearing mouthguards. Mouthguards are helpful during contact sports to protect the teeth. However, they work best when they are fitted correctly to a person's teeth.

Some people have a higher risk of injury if their teeth do not line up perfectly. An orthodontist can help fix these issues to make injuries less likely. Taking care of your teeth now helps keep your smile safe for the future.
