Dennis Banks was a leader for Native Americans. He was born in 1937 in Minnesota. When he was five, he went to a boarding school. The school tried to change Native American children. It did not let them speak their own languages.

Banks wanted to help his people. In 1968, he helped start a group called AIM. AIM stands for the American Indian Movement. This group spoke for Native Americans in cities. They fought for civil rights. They also fought for fair treatment.

Banks led many protests to get attention. In 1972, he helped lead a group called the Trail of Broken Treaties. This group traveled to Washington, D.C. They wanted leaders to listen to their problems. In 1973, Banks led a protest at Wounded Knee. This was a place in South Dakota. The protest lasted 71 days.

Later, Banks became a teacher. He taught at many colleges. He also worked as a counselor. He helped people with drug and alcohol problems. He worked hard to make sure Native American traditions were respected. He died in 2017.
