Democracy Now! is an independent, hour-long news program based in Manhattan, New York. It functions as a global newscast that combines news reporting, investigative journalism, and political commentary. The program is designed to provide a platform for activists and the general citizenry to debate those in the "establishment." It focuses on documenting social movements, struggles for justice, and activism that challenges corporate power. The show also acts as a watchdog regarding the effects of American foreign policy. While many critics and fans describe the program as progressive, principal host Amy Goodman prefers to say the show allows "people speaking for themselves."

The program operates through a unique broadcasting mechanism to reach a worldwide audience. It airs live every weekday at 8 a.m. Eastern Time. It is the only public medium in the United States that airs simultaneously on satellite, cable television, radio, and the Internet. Currently, more than 1,400 radio and television stations broadcast the program globally. To maintain its independence, Democracy Now! Productions follows a strict funding model. The organization does not accept money from advertisers, corporate underwriting, or government funding. Instead, it is funded entirely through contributions from listeners, viewers, and various foundations.

Democracy Now! Productions is an independent media nonprofit organization. It manages over $36 million in assets and operates with an annual budget of approximately $10 million. Funding comes from individual donors and organizations such as the Ford Foundation, the Lannan Foundation, and the J.M. Kaplan Fund. This financial structure is intended to ensure that the news coverage remains free from corporate or political influence. By relying on the public, the program seeks to maintain a direct connection with its audience.

The history of the program began on February 19, 1996, at WBAI in New York City. It was founded by journalists Amy Goodman, Juan González, Larry Bensky, Salim Muwakkil, and Julie Drizin. Initially, the show was a radio program airing on five Pacifica Radio stations. A major turning point occurred in 2000 when the program expanded into television. Shortly after September 11, 2001, the show began broadcasting on television every weekday. During the September 11 attacks, the crew performed an eight-hour marathon broadcast. At that time, they were the closest national broadcast to Ground Zero.

Over the decades, the program has moved through several different studio locations. From 2001 to 2009, the show was located in a converted firehouse building in New York City's Chinatown. In November 2009, the production moved to a repurposed graphic arts building in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. This new studio covers 8,500 square feet. In 2010, it became the first radio or television studio in the nation to receive LEED Platinum certification. This is the highest rating awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council for environmental excellence.
