It was founded in New York City by Amy Goodman, Juan González, Larry Bensky, Salim Muwakkil, and Julie Drizin. At first, it only aired on five Pacifica Radio stations. A big change happened in 2000 when the program became a television show. In 2001, the show moved to a converted firehouse building in Chinatown. During the September 11 attacks, the crew stayed on the air for eight hours. They were the closest national broadcast to Ground Zero during that time.

There are many interesting facts about how the program operates today. The show is broadcast via more than 1,400 radio and television stations worldwide. Its production group, Democracy Now! Productions, has about $36 million in assets. The annual budget for the show is around $10 million. In 2010, the show moved to a new studio in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. This 8,500-square-foot studio was the first in the country to receive LEED Platinum certification. This is a special rating for buildings that are very good for the environment.

The show has also featured famous thinkers like Noam Chomsky. The journalists at the show have won many important awards. They received the George Polk Award for a report on Nigeria in 1998.
