It acts as a central hub for more than 1,000 public radio stations across the United States. NPR is important because it shares news and culture programs with many different communities. It works independently, meaning no government or big company controls its content. This independence allows the organization to make its own choices about what to report. Most of its member stations are owned by non-profit groups like colleges or school districts.

NPR works through a system of distribution to reach listeners everywhere. It manages the Public Radio Satellite System to send its shows to other stations. This system also helps deliver important messages through the Emergency Alert System. Many people listen to NPR through live radio, but you can also find it online. You can listen to shows on mobile networks or as podcasts. A podcast is a digital audio file you can download to hear anytime. Some stations even carry programs from the British BBC World Service.

The history of NPR began in the early 1970s. It was created after the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967 was signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson. This law helped start the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. NPR officially replaced the National Educational Radio Network on February 26, 1970. Its very first broadcast aired on April 20, 1971. That first show covered Senate hearings about the Vietnam War. In 1971, the popular afternoon show All Things Considered also premiered.

NPR has faced many big moments and changes over the years. In 1983, the group faced a hard time with a $7 million debt. It took about three years for them to pay that money back. In 2003, NPR received a huge gift of over $200 million from Joan B. Kroc. This was the largest gift ever given to a cultural group. This money helped grow their budget and their staff significantly. In 2002, they also opened a second headquarters in Culver City, California. This office, called NPR West, helps them cover the western United States.

Today, NPR is a name that many people recognize in their daily lives. Their most famous shows are Morning Edition and All Things Considered. These programs are very popular during the morning and afternoon drive times. Morning Edition reaches about 14.9 million people every single week. All Things Considered reaches about 14.7 million people each week. You can see how much they have grown by looking at their podcasts. By 2015, people had downloaded NPR podcasts 94 million times.
