It is the oldest and largest broadcaster of its kind in the world. The organization has a huge team of 21,000 staff members. It works under a royal charter and an agreement with the government. Its main goal is to inform, educate, and entertain people. Many people in Britain call it "the Beeb" or "Auntie." This shows how much the BBC is part of daily life.

Money for the BBC comes from a special annual television licence fee. All British households and companies pay this fee if they use equipment to watch live TV. People also pay it to use the BBC's streaming service called iPlayer. The British government and Parliament set the amount for this fee. This money pays for radio, TV, and online services across the UK. Some money also comes from BBC Studios, which sells shows to other countries.

The BBC started as a private company in 1922. It was first called the British Broadcasting Company. A man named John Reith became its manager in December 1922. He wanted the BBC to be a public service rather than a business. In 1927, it changed its name to the British Broadcasting Corporation. This new version was a non-commercial organization. It used a motto that said, "Nation shall speak peace unto Nation."
