The British Broadcasting Corporation, known as the BBC, is a major British public service broadcaster.

It is headquartered at Broadcasting House in London. The BBC is the oldest and largest broadcaster globally in terms of stature and staff. It employs approximately 21,000 people. The organization operates under a royal charter. It also maintains an agreement with the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. Its core mission is to inform, educate, and entertain the public.

Funding for the BBC follows a specific legal and financial process. The primary source of revenue is an annual television licence fee. This fee is charged to British households, companies, and organizations. Anyone using equipment to receive or record live television must pay it. The fee also applies to those using the BBC's streaming service, iPlayer. The British government sets the fee amount. Parliament must then agree to it. This money funds radio, television, and online services throughout the UK.

Additional revenue comes from commercial activities. The subsidiary BBC Studios, formerly known as BBC Worldwide, sells programs internationally. It also distributes BBC News, which is a 24-hour English-language news service. BBC Global News Ltd provides BBC.com. Since April 2014, the BBC has also funded the BBC World Service. This service was originally launched in 1932 as the BBC Empire Service. It now broadcasts in 28 different languages. It provides comprehensive TV, radio, and online services in Arabic and Persian.

The history of the BBC began with early radio experiments. In June 1920, the first live public broadcast occurred in Chelmsford. This broadcast featured the Australian soprano Dame Nellie Melba. It was sponsored by the Daily Mail. This event changed how the British public viewed radio. However, the General Post Office (GPO) initially banned further broadcasts. They feared radio would interfere with military and civil communications. By 1922, the GPO received nearly 100 license requests. They responded to a petition from 63 wireless societies. This led to the formation of the British Broadcasting Company Ltd on October 18, 1922.

John Reith became the general manager in December 1922. He shaped the BBC into a public service rather than a commercial business. The company faced financial trouble because set sales were low. Amateurs often built their own receivers. The Sykes Committee reviewed broadcasting to fix these issues. They recommended a license fee system with better enforcement. The BBC also launched the Radio Times in September 1923. This was the world's first broadcast listings magazine.

One 1988 Christmas edition sold 11 million copies. This remains the biggest-selling edition of any British magazine.

A major turning point was the 1926 United Kingdom general strike. During this crisis, newspaper production was interrupted. The BBC became the primary source of news for the nation. This event helped the BBC build a massive national audience. Following the Crawford Committee recommendations, the company changed its structure. On January 1, 1927, it became the British Broadcasting Corporation.

As a corporation, it was a non-commercial, Crown-chartered organization. It adopted the motto, "Nation shall speak peace unto Nation."

Under Reith's leadership, the BBC maintained strict standards. He believed in broadcasting the best of human knowledge. This often involved significant censorship. Broadcasters had to submit drafts of their content for approval. Until 1928, entertainers avoided religious, political, or vulgar topics. The BBC also promoted British music over foreign alternatives. In the 1930s, the BBC monitored political broadcasts. They even censored coverage of the 1932 Metropolitan Police Federation march. These rules were designed to maintain a specific high moral tone.
