Most people think of a demigod as someone who is half-divine and half-human. This often happens when a god or goddess has a child with a person. Sometimes, a person becomes a demigod after they die. This can happen if they were a great hero or found a "divine spark." Some people even use the word to describe humans with amazing talents. These people are so gifted that they seem almost like gods.

Different cultures have different ways of explaining how these beings work. In ancient Greece, the idea was not always the same. The poets Homer and Hesiod wrote about heroes who were called "half-gods." These heroes were not always born from a god and a mortal. Instead, they were people with great strength, power, and good families. When they died, they went through a process called "heroization." This meant they were honored as if they were divine.

History shows us many names of famous demigods from around the world. In Celtic stories, the warrior Cú Chulainn was the son of the god Lugh. In China, a character named Erlang Shen was born to the Jade Emperor's sister. In Japan, a man named Abe no Seimei had a mother who was a Kitsune. A Kitsune is a divine fox, and this gave him magic powers. In Finland, the wise demigod Väinämöinen had a magical singing voice. These stories help us understand how different people viewed greatness.

In Hinduism, the word demigod is often used for beings called devas. These are deities who were once human and later became gods. For example, Nandi and Garuda are important beings in these traditions. There are also stories about Queen Kunti and her children. She used a special mantra to have children with different gods. Her sons, like Arjuna and Bhima, were very famous heroes. Some traditions say these devas are still servants to a Supreme Lord.

Many stories from the Philippines also feature powerful demigods. In the traditions called Anitism, these beings can be very strong. Mayari is a moon goddess who rules the night. There is also Tala, who is a goddess of the stars. Some demigods, like Laon, can even talk to animals. Others, like Oryol, helped bring peace to the land. These stories show how much people wonder about the world around them.
