It works closely with Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte to form a massive urban agglomeration. This growth is driven by people moving from the main city for residential and commercial space.

The physical landscape of the municipality is mostly a flat coastal plain. As you move further inland, the land becomes slightly undulating. A very important feature of the geography is the presence of extensive wetlands. These are found around the Weras Ganga river and Bolgoda Lake. Specifically, the Bellanwila and Attidiya marshes are vital ecological protected zones. These marshes support high levels of biodiversity. The region is located in a wet zone, which means it receives significant rainfall. Most of this rain arrives during the southwest monsoon and intermonsoon periods. The climate stays warm, with mean daytime temperatures around 29 degrees Celsius. Maximum temperatures often reach between 30.5 and 31 degrees Celsius.

There are several interesting theories regarding the origin of the name Dehiwala. One historical story links the name to the word "Diya Wala." This term refers to a dip or a hole filled with water. In the past, the landscape was filled with many ponds and lakes. Another theory suggests the name comes from a forest of lime trees. It is said that the King of Kotte sourced his lime requirements from this area. Before European colonization, the land was part of the Kingdom of Kotte. At that time, many areas like Ratmalana were simply large, sparsely populated marshlands.

The history of the region changed through several periods of foreign rule. During the Portuguese era, the area included villages like Kalubowila and Attidiya. Early records from 1510 AD mention a village called "Galkissa." This name came from a rocky mound known as Lihiniyagala that protruded into the Bay. Later, the Dutch arrived in the early seventeenth century. They established a more organized administrative structure for taxation and law. The British occupation in the 19th century brought a Provincial administrative system called a Kachcheri. This period also saw the creation of local government structures.

A famous piece of history involves the British Governor, Sir Thomas Maitland. In 1806, he acquired land at Galkissa to build a personal residence. He named the mansion "Mount Lavinia House." The name Mount Lavinia actually comes from his romantic affair with a local dancer named Lovina. The original mansion is now the Mount Lavinia Hotel. The village grew around this building and took its name from Lovina. This historical romance helped shape the identity of the modern suburb. The area eventually attained official Municipal status in December 1959.

Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia is a very diverse place for its people. According to 2012 data, the population was 245,974. The city is multi-ethnic and multi-religious.
