It functions as a major administrative center for the region. The city serves as the headquarters for the Avadi City Police and the Avadi City Corporation. It also acts as the center for the Avadi Taluk. Situated near the large city of Chennai, Avadi is a vital part of the state's urban landscape. The city is a bustling hub where government, industry, and residential life intersect.

One of the most defining features of Avadi is its role in national defense. The city serves as a major defense industrial corridor for India. It houses many large manufacturing public undertakings and research centers. For example, the Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF) produces important armored vehicles. This includes the indigenous Ajeya tank, which is a version of the T-72. The factory also produces the main battle tank known as Arjun. Other major establishments include the Engine Factory, the Ordnance Depot, and the Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE). The CVRDE focuses on research for battle tanks and combat vehicles. They have developed products like the Nag anti-tank missile and armored ambulances.

Avadi's military presence is quite diverse and includes several branches of the armed forces. The Indian Air Force maintains a presence through the Mechanical Transport Training Institute (MTTI). This institute is used for training personnel in driving and repairing vehicles. The Air Force also operates a base repair depot for equipment maintenance. The Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) also have divisions in the area. The city also hosts the Tamil Nadu Special Police, specifically the 2nd and 5th Battalions. This concentration of military and research institutions makes Avadi a critical site for national security.

Beyond defense, Avadi is part of a growing industrial and technology sector. The suburb is a part of the "auto belt" that grew in the post-World War II era. This belt developed alongside the automobile industry in the north and west of Madras. Today, the city is expanding into the information technology sector. A new Tidel Park is being constructed on 10 acres of land at the Avadi–Pattabiram area. This project is expected to cost 2,300 million and covers 5,57,000 square feet. Once finished, it is expected to provide jobs for 30,000 people. Major companies like Dell Technology and Tata Consultancy Service (TCS) have shown interest in moving there.

The history of the city provides interesting clues about its identity. The exact origin of the name "Avadi" remains unknown. One theory suggests it comes from the Tamil words "Aa" (cow) and "Adi" or "gudi" (place). This would imply the area was once a place with many cows. Another popular theory claims it is an acronym for "Armoured Vehicles and Ammunition Depot of India." However, historians believe this is likely a recent backronym. British records from the 19th century refer to the place as "Avady." The name was already in use by 1856 when the first public railway opened. This predates the move of the military arsenal to Avadi, which happened after 1870.

Geography and nature also play a role in the city's character. Avadi contains the Paruthipattu Lake, which covers about 200 acres.

In the past, this lake provided water for irrigation on local farmlands. It remains a place that attracts many birds throughout the year. Recently, the lake underwent a major renovation with a budget of 32 crores. It was converted into an eco-park that opened on 19 June 2019. This renovation included a 3-km-long walking track and a central plaza. The project helped address issues like sewage pollution and encroachment.

Transportation in Avadi is highly developed to support its large population. According to the 2011 census, the population was 345,996 people. The Avadi railway station is a major terminal for the Chennai Suburban Railway. It handles more than 75,000 passengers every day, which is the seventh highest footfall in Southern Railways. The station connects commuters to areas like Chennai Central and Villivakkam. Road travel is also common via the Chennai–Tiruttani highway and the Chennai Outer Ring Road.
