Deep web

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The internet has many different layers. Most people use the surface web every day. You can find surface web sites easily with a search engine. However, there is a much larger part called the deep web.

This part is also called the invisible web. It contains things that standard search engines cannot find. This is not always a bad thing. The deep web is just a way to describe content that is not indexed.

How does the deep web stay hidden? It works because search engines use programs called crawlers. These crawlers follow links from one page to another. Some deep web content does not have these links. This is called unlinked content.

Other pages are dynamic. This means the page changes based on what you type into a form. A crawler cannot guess every possible thing a person might type. Some sites also require a password or a login. This keeps the information private for only certain people.

People have been studying this for a long time. In 1994, Jill Ellsworth used the term "Invisible Web." In 2001, a scientist named Michael K. Bergman used the term "deep web."

He used it as a term for search indexing. Earlier, a program called @1 held 5.7 terabytes of content. That was 30 times the size of the web back then. That company was later bought by AOL in 1998. Many researchers still work to understand these hidden paths.

There are many real-world uses for the deep web. You likely use it without even knowing it. Online banking is part of the deep web. Your private email and cloud storage are also there.

Even some social media profiles are deep web content. Some news sites use a paywall to hide stories. This means you must pay to see the text. This keeps the content behind a digital gate.

It is important to know the difference between the deep web and the dark web. They are not the same thing. The dark web is a small part of the deep web. It is hidden on purpose.

You cannot get there with a normal browser. You must use special software like Tor to see it. Tor helps people stay anonymous online. While the deep web is mostly for private tools, the dark web is a separate, hidden section.
