Deep web

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The web has many parts. Most people use the surface web. You can find these sites with a search engine. But some parts are not in those lists. This is called the deep web. A scientist named Michael K. Bergman named it in 2001.

Why is it hidden? Some sites need a password. You might use the deep web for your bank. You might use it for your email. Some sites also have a paywall. This is a way to make people pay for news.

Other parts are hard to find for other reasons. Some pages change based on what you type. These are called dynamic pages. Other pages are not linked to by any other site. This means web crawlers cannot find them. A crawler is a program that follows links.

There is also a part called the dark web. It is a small part of the deep web. People use special software to get there. This software can hide who you are. This is different from the regular deep web. The deep web is mostly for useful things.
