David Stirling was a British army officer who changed how soldiers fought.

He was born in 1915 into a famous Scottish family. He grew up in a home called Keir House in Perthshire. Before the war, he even worked as a cattle rancher in Montana. He was a man who liked to take big risks. These risks helped him create a famous military group. This group was called the Special Air Service, or the SAS.

Stirling had a very specific idea for fighting in the desert. He believed small teams could win by using surprise. He thought a few trained soldiers could attack many targets in one night. To do this, he used special Jeeps to move through the sand. These Jeeps were cut down and fitted with machine guns. They could drive fast across the harsh desert terrain. This way of fighting was much safer than jumping from planes.

In 1941, Stirling went to the Middle East to start his plan. He had to sneak into a headquarters in Cairo to talk to leaders. He even used crutches after a parachuting accident during his mission. He spoke to Major General Neil Ritchie to get permission. The new unit was given a secret name to trick the enemy. It was called L Detachment, Special Air Service Brigade. This helped hide the fact that a real brigade existed.

During the war, the SAS was very successful at raids. In one night in July 1942, they destroyed 37 enemy aircraft. They used Jeeps to attack the Sidi Haneish landing strip. The SAS also included a group of Free French paratroopers.

In the 15 months before he was caught, they destroyed many planes. They also wrecked railways and many enemy vehicles. Stirling was promoted to lieutenant-colonel in September 1942 because of his work.

Stirling was captured by German forces in January 1943. He was a prisoner for the rest of the war. After the war ended, he moved to Africa in 1947. He started the Capricorn Africa Society to fight racial unfairness. He wanted different races to have more social equality. Later, he worked for private military companies in places like the Gulf States.
