David Stirling was a British army officer.

He was born in 1915. During World War II, he had a big idea. He wanted to make a special group of soldiers. He called them the SAS.

Stirling thought small teams could win by using surprise. They used Jeeps to drive through the desert at night. These Jeeps were fitted with machine guns. The SAS used these raids to attack enemy airfields. In one night, they destroyed 37 planes.

Stirling was captured by the enemy in 1943. He was a prisoner for the rest of the war. After the war, he moved to Africa. He started a group to fight racial unfairness. He wanted people of different races to be more equal. Later in life, he worked for private military companies. He also tried to start groups to change how governments worked.
