He is a white supremacist and a neo-Nazi. These terms describe people who believe certain races are better than others. He also shares many conspiracy theories. These are ideas that claim secret groups are working to control the world. He often writes about these ideas on the internet and in newsletters. Many groups, like the Anti-Defamation League, have called him a very famous racist and anti-Semite. His life has been defined by these strong and harmful beliefs.

Duke's path into radical politics began when he was a young student. He grew up in places like Oklahoma and New Orleans. During his school years, he began reading books that promoted segregation. Segregation was a system that kept different races apart. He also studied books about the Nazi party from Germany. By the time he graduated from high school, he had already joined the Ku Klux Klan. In 1970, while studying at Louisiana State University, he even formed a white student group. He was known for wearing Nazi uniforms during his time as a student.

In 1974, Duke started a group called the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. He became their "grand wizard" in 1976. He tried to change how the group looked to the public. He wanted them to appear more professional and well-groomed. He even said the group should follow the law and avoid violence. He also allowed women to join the group as equal members. However, he later left the Klan in 1980. He said he did not like the violence that other members committed.

Duke tried to win many government jobs through elections. He first ran for the Louisiana State Senate as a Democrat in 1975. In 1988, he ran for president of the United States. He did not win the Democratic nomination, so he ran for the Populist Party instead. In December 1988, he joined the Republican Party. This change helped him win a seat in the Louisiana House of Representatives. This was his only elected office. He later ran for governor in 1991 and for the U.S. Senate in 1990.

Later in his life, Duke faced serious legal trouble. In the 1990s, he told his supporters that he was having a hard time with money. He asked them to send him money for basic needs. However, he was actually financially secure at that time. He used the money he collected for recreational gambling instead. This is called fraud, which is a type of dishonesty. In December 2002, Duke pleaded guilty to felony fraud. He had to serve 15 months in a federal prison in Texas.
