Adjaye uses specific design techniques to influence how people experience a space. He often manages natural light to improve the interior environment. For the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, he installed hidden skylights. These skylights provide natural light to the five internal galleries. He also uses large windows to reduce boundaries between the city and the museum. In other works, he incorporates cultural symbols into the architecture. The National Museum of African American History and Culture uses a crown motif from Yoruba sculpture.

His career has progressed through several distinct stages of project scale. He began with residential projects, such as the Dirty House and Glass House in 2002. He also designed studio-homes for artists like Lorna Simpson. Later, he moved to larger public buildings. These included the Idea Store in the United Kingdom and the Nobel Peace Center in Norway. He has also designed specialized spaces like the Aishti Foundation in Beirut. This gallery is over 40,000 square feet and combines art viewing with retail shopping.

Adjaye's life and education provided a global perspective for his work. He was born in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on September 22, 1966. His father was a Ghanaian diplomat. As a child, Adjaye lived in Tanzania, Egypt, Yemen, and Lebanon. He moved to Britain at the age of nine. He earned a BA in architecture from London South Bank University in 1990. He won the RIBA Bronze Medal for his undergraduate project, Respite. He later completed a master's programme at the Royal College of Art in 1993.

His professional achievements are marked by significant international honors. In 2017, he was knighted for his services to architecture. He received the Royal Gold Medal in 2021. This made him the first African recipient of the award. He was also appointed to the Order of Merit in 2022. His firm, Adjaye Associates, was established in 2000.
