Data storage

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Data storage is how we record and keep information. To do this, we use a physical material called a medium.

This medium holds the data so it can be used later. Information can be seen or heard in many ways. It can flow through the Internet or on the radio. We can also observe information directly. Some storage is even part of living things.

Molecules like DNA and RNA act as biological storage.

There are many ways that recording works. You can use almost any form of energy to record things. Electronic storage needs electrical power to save and find data.

This type of data is often called digital data. Digital information is stored on electronic media in different formats. We can use print, film, magnetic, or optical media.

Some media are even temporary. For example, smoke signals or skywriting do not last long.

People have used many different tools over time. Early machines used cylinders to record sound. Later, people used magnetic tape for recording.

We also use optical discs to store information today. Some art tools like crayons act as both equipment and medium. The wax or charcoal becomes part of the surface. This shows how many ways we can leave a mark.

Digital storage has grown at a very fast rate. In 1986, only 1% of the world's storage was digital. By 1993, that number grew to 3%. It jumped to 25% in the year 2000. By 2007, digital storage reached 97% of the total.

In 2002, people produced five exabytes of new information. About 92% of that data went onto hard disk drives. The amount of digital storage doubles roughly every three years.

Digital data helps us manage a huge amount of work. Electronic documents take up much less space than paper. This is a key job for any general-purpose computer. We can also use barcodes to record data on paper. This makes the information easy for machines to read. Even though we make a lot of data, we keep growing. The amount of data generated will reach 181 zettabytes in 2025.
