Data storage is a way to keep information. We use a physical material called a medium to hold it.

One old medium was a cylinder for a phonograph.

You can also use magnetic tape to store data.

Some media are very small. Electronic devices use electricity to save and find data. This is called digital data.

Even living things store data. Molecules like DNA and RNA hold information in our bodies.

Digital storage has grown very fast. In 1986, only 1% of storage was digital. By 2007, it was 97%. This means most information is now digital. Digital files take up much less space than paper. This helps us save a huge amount of things. In 2002, people made five exabytes of new information. Most of that went onto hard disk drives. The amount of digital storage doubles every three years. We are making more data than we can hold.
