Dark galaxy

space Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Most galaxies shine brightly with billions of stars. But scientists think some galaxies might be dark. A dark galaxy is a place with very little light. It may have almost no stars at all. Instead, it is mostly made of dark matter. Dark matter is an invisible substance that has mass. This mass uses gravity to hold things together.

Scientists believe these dark places are very important. They might be the building blocks of the universe. Big galaxies may form when dark galaxies merge together. This process brings gas to larger galaxies. That gas helps new stars grow very fast.

Finding these galaxies is a hard job for astronomers. They cannot see them with normal light telescopes. Instead, they use special radio telescopes. These tools look for a gas called hydrogen. They search for a signal called the 21-cm line. This signal comes from atoms of hydrogen.

If a telescope finds gas but no stars, it might be a dark galaxy. Scientists also look at light from far away objects called quasars. They check if hydrogen gas is blocking that light. This helps them find hidden clouds in space.

History shows how much we are still learning. In 2005, astronomers found a gas cloud named VIRGOHI21. It seemed to pull on the galaxy NGC 4254. For a long time, people thought it was a dark galaxy. Later, they found it was just a gas cloud. This cloud was stripped away by a fast collision. This shows how tricky it is to tell them apart.

Many candidates are still being studied today.

There are many names for possible dark galaxies. One candidate is called HI1225+01. Another one is named AGC229385. A very recent and promising one is AC G185.0-11.5. In 2016, scientists studied a galaxy called Dragonfly 44. It has the mass of our Milky Way. But it has almost no visible stars. It is made almost entirely of dark matter.

In June 2025, scientists found another one named CDG-2.

These dark galaxies help us understand the cosmic web. The cosmic web is a huge structure in space. It is made of invisible paths of gas and dark matter. These paths act like roads for the universe. They feed and build galaxies where the paths meet.

Learning about dark galaxies helps us see this web. It shows us how the whole universe stays connected. We are still discovering how everything fits together.
