Dark galaxy

space Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Most galaxies shine with many bright stars. But some might be dark. A dark galaxy is a place with very few stars. It is made mostly of dark matter. Dark matter is an invisible stuff that has mass. This mass helps pull things together with gravity.

Scientists use radio telescopes to find them. These tools look for a gas called hydrogen. They look for a special signal called the 21-cm line. This signal comes from atoms of hydrogen. If they find gas but no stars, it might be a dark galaxy.

Dark galaxies may be very important. Some scientists think they are building blocks. They might help make big galaxies like our Milky Way. They bring gas to big galaxies. This gas helps new stars grow fast.

Finding them is hard. Some gas clouds look like dark galaxies. But those clouds do not have dark matter. Scientists are still looking for real ones. They want to learn more about the cosmic web. This web is a set of invisible paths in space. It helps build galaxies and clusters.
