She specialized in investigative journalism. This is a type of reporting that involves deep research into secrets. Her work focused on uncovering misconduct by politicians and those in power. She investigated topics like corruption, nepotism, and money laundering. Nepotism is when leaders give unfair advantages to friends or family. She also looked into the links between organized crime and the online gambling industry. Her work was vital for holding governments accountable to their citizens.

Caruana Galizia used several platforms to share her findings. She worked as a columnist for The Sunday Times of Malta and The Malta Independent. In 2008, she launched her personal blog, Running Commentary. This blog became a major source of information in Malta. It regularly attracted over 400,000 views. This number was larger than the total circulation of all Maltese newspapers combined. Through her blog, she provided direct commentary on current political events. This allowed her to reach a massive audience quickly.

Her investigations often targeted high-level government officials. In 2016, she began reporting on the Panama Papers. This was a massive leak of documents about secret offshore companies. She was the first to report that a Maltese minister had connections to Panama. She also revealed that the Prime Minister's chief of staff owned a similar trust in New Zealand. These reports linked several politicians to secret financial structures. Because of this work, Politico called her a "one-woman WikiLeaks." She was recognized as one of the people shaping Europe.

Conducting this work brought significant danger. Caruana Galizia faced constant intimidation and threats. These came via phone calls, emails, and notes left at her home. She also faced many legal battles. At the time of her death, she was facing 48 libel suits. Libel is a legal claim that someone has published false statements to hurt a reputation. Some of these lawsuits were for very large amounts of money. For example, Pilatus Bank sued her for US$40 million in an Arizona court. These legal and personal pressures were meant to silence her.

On 16 October 2017, a violent event occurred near her home in Bidnija. A car bomb was detonated inside her vehicle. The explosion killed her instantly. The blast was so powerful that it threw her car 80 metres into a field. This attack was the sixth car bombing in Malta since early 2016. It was also the fourth such bombing to result in a death. The assassination caused widespread condemnation across Malta and the international community. It highlighted the extreme risks faced by journalists in certain environments.

Following her death, investigations into the crime began. In December 2017, three men were arrested in connection with the attack. Later, in November 2019, police arrested Yorgen Fenech on his yacht. Fenech was the owner of a Dubai-based company called 17 Black. This company had been mentioned in her investigations regarding the Panama Papers. His arrest followed a magisterial inquiry into how 17 Black planned to pay millions to government figures. These legal processes sought to find the truth behind the violence.

Caruana Galizia's legacy continues through several global efforts. In April 2018, an international group of 45 journalists formed The Daphne Project. This consortium worked together to complete the investigations she had started. Additionally, the GUE/NGL Award for Journalists, Whistleblowers & Defenders of the Right to Information was created in 2018. Many memorials have been built to honor her. These include a monument in Sliema and a memorial at the University of Malta.
