She is a dual citizen of the Philippines and the United States. Ressa is widely recognized for her leadership in digital journalism and her defense of press freedom. She serves as the co-founder and CEO of Rappler, a major news organization in the Philippines. Her work focuses on the intersection of technology, democracy, and the truth. Ressa has become a global symbol for journalists facing political pressure.

Her career began with a deep focus on investigative reporting. She spent nearly twenty years as a lead investigative reporter for CNN in Southeast Asia. During this time, she specialized in investigating complex terrorist networks.

She also served as CNN's bureau chief in Manila until 1995. Later, she managed the network's Jakarta bureau from 1995 to 2005. These roles allowed her to study how conflict and politics shape societies. She later became an author-in-residence at the International Center for Political Violence and Terrorism Research.

In 2012, Ressa helped launch Rappler to change how news is delivered.

She founded the site with three other women and a small team of 12 people. The team included both journalists and developers to create a multimedia experience. Rappler started as a Facebook page called MovePH in August 2011. It evolved into a full website on January 1, 2012. This platform became one of the first major multimedia news portals in the Philippines.

Her reporting often put her at odds with the Philippine government. Ressa was a vocal critic of President Rodrigo Duterte and his policies. Rappler published stories regarding the administration's war on drugs and police actions. The website also investigated a "troll army" that used fake news to manipulate public opinion. In 2017, President Duterte publicly attacked Rappler, calling its news "fake." This tension led to several legal challenges against her and her company.

In 2019, Ressa faced a significant legal battle involving cyberlibel.

Authorities arrested her following a complaint by businessman Wilfredo Keng. The charge was based on a 2012 article that had a typographical error. Prosecutors argued that correcting the error in 2014 counted as "republishing" the content. This was controversial because the cyberlibel law was passed after the original story. On June 15, 2020, a court in Manila found her guilty of cyberlibel. Many international groups viewed this conviction as an attack on free speech.

Despite these legal pressures, Ressa received the highest global honors.

In 2021, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. She shared this honor with Dmitry Muratov, a journalist from Russia. They were recognized for safeguarding freedom of expression. The Nobel Committee stated that such freedom is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace. This award highlighted the importance of protecting truth in a digital age.

Beyond journalism, Ressa is a dedicated educator and researcher. She is a professor of professional practice at Columbia University. In this role, she leads projects involving artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on democracy. She has also held fellowships at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard Kennedy School. Ressa works with organizations like the Real Facebook Oversight Board to monitor social media. She also serves on the leadership panel for the United Nations Internet Governance Forum. Her work helps society navigate the complex relationship between technology and civic life.
