He built a massive empire that reached across 23 different countries. His work included many different industries like shipping, salt, and hotels. He was so private that he lived a reclusive life. Most people did not know who he was because he avoided the news. In 1982, he was actually number one on the Forbes 400 list. This list shows the richest people in America.

Ludwig learned how ships worked at a very young age. He started by salvaging a boat when he was only nine. After leaving school in eighth grade, he worked many hard jobs. He learned how to be a machinist and a marine engineer. By the time he was 19, he had his own business. He used boats to move lumber and molasses around the Great Lakes. Later, he found a new way to pay for bigger ships. He used pre-agreed charters as collateral to help fund his growth.

In 1954, he started a salt company in Mexico. This company became the largest salt company in the entire world. He also built a large citrus farm in Panama. When Daniel was 15, his parents separated. He moved to Port Arthur, Texas, to live with his grandfather. He eventually married Gladys Madeline Ludwig in 1928. Later, he married Gertrude Virginia Higgins. He lived in a penthouse in Manhattan for many years. He passed away on August 27, 1992, at the age of 95.

Even though he was a businessman, he cared about science. In 1971, he began selling parts of his business. He used that money to start the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research. This institute is located in Switzerland. Since his death, his funds have given over one billion dollars to help. This money helps scientists study how to treat cancer. He also set up Ludwig Centers at six major universities in the United States. These include Harvard and Stanford. His wealth now helps many people stay healthy through research.
