He was born in the city of Gdańsk. At that time, it was part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. His family came from Germany and worked as merchants. Fahrenheit spent much of his life in the Dutch Republic. He was very interested in studying how the world works. He spent his time making scientific tools like barometers. These tools help people measure things in nature.

Fahrenheit changed how we measure heat with a new invention. Before him, most thermometers were filled with spirit or alcohol. He created the first successful mercury-in-glass thermometers. Mercury is a shiny, silver liquid that stays liquid at many temperatures. These new thermometers were much more accurate than older ones. Because they were so consistent, different people could compare their readings. This helped scientists trust their measurements much more. His design was a huge step forward for science.

Fahrenheit's journey to becoming a scientist was quite a long path. In 1701, his parents died after eating poisonous mushrooms. He had to live under the care of guardians. In 1702, he began a four-year apprenticeship in Amsterdam. He traveled through the Holy Roman Empire, Sweden, and Denmark. In 1708, he met an astronomer named Ole Rømer in Copenhagen. Rømer showed him a way to measure temperature. This meeting inspired Fahrenheit to improve his own tools. He began experimenting with mercury thermometers in 1713.

He created a special way to mark his temperature scale.

Fahrenheit used three fixed points to set his numbers. First, he used a mixture of ice, water, and salt. This gave him the lowest temperature point of 0 degrees. Second, he used water with ice forming on the surface. This point was set at 32 degrees. Third, he used the heat from a human mouth. This third point was set at 96 degrees on his original scale. Later, the scale was changed so that water boils at 212 degrees.

We still see his name in our world today. The Fahrenheit scale was used by many English-speaking countries for a long time. It was the main standard for weather and medicine until the 1970s. Even though most of the world uses Celsius now, the United States still uses Fahrenheit. When you hear a weather report in America, you are hearing his scale. His work helped make modern science much more precise. He proved that even small tools can change how we see everything.
