To play, you stand on a special dance platform or stage.

On the screen, colored arrows scroll upwards toward a set of stationary arrows called the Step Zone. You must step on the correct panels with your feet when the arrows overlap. The game judges how well you time your moves with the music. You can earn grades like Marvelous, Perfect, or Great for being accurate. If you miss too many steps, your Dance Gauge, or life bar, will run out.

If the bar is empty, the song ends and the game is over.

Some songs include special types of arrows to make the game more interesting. Freeze Arrows are long green arrows that require you to hold your foot down. If you let go too soon, you might get an "N.G." score.

There are also Shock Arrows, which look like walls of lightning. You must avoid stepping on these to keep your score high. In some versions, hitting a shock arrow can even hide the next steps from you. These features add a new layer of skill to the dancing.

This game series began in Japan in 1998 as part of the Bemani series.

Players can choose different ways to play depending on the version. You can play a Single mode alone or a Versus mode with another person. There is even a Double mode where one player uses all eight panels on the stage. Some older games had a Battle mode where players sent distractions to each other. The game also uses a Groove Radar to show how a song is difficult. This radar looks at things like the density of steps and how many jumps you must make.
