Puran Chandra Gupta started the paper in 1942. He first began it in a small town called Jhansi. Later, he moved the paper to Kanpur. He launched the Kanpur edition on September 21, 1947. In the early days, the paper had money problems. Gupta had to borrow money from his own family. He also used cheap articles to save costs.

Over time, the paper grew very fast. It added many new editions in different cities. In 1979, it started in Lucknow and Allahabad. It later moved into many more areas. By 2022, it was the number one newspaper in India. In 2016, it was the fifth largest in the world.

Today, it is owned by a company called Jagran Prakashan Limited. This company is listed on stock exchanges in India. This means people can buy parts of the company. Some people have accused the paper of spreading false news. However, it remains one of the most read papers in the country.
