Even earlier, in 2016, it was ranked as the fifth largest newspaper in the whole world. By 2019, it had a huge readership of 68.6 million people.
The story of this paper began with a man named Puran Chandra Gupta. He first started the paper in 1942 in a town called Jhansi. At first, things were not easy for the new business. Gupta had to borrow money from his own family to keep it running. He saved money by using cheap articles and getting free stories from political groups. He also traveled to big cities to sell space for advertisements.
Gupta had to make some quick changes to his plans. He originally wanted to launch the paper in the city of Lucknow. However, he learned that other papers were starting Hindi editions there too. To stay ahead, he moved his machinery to Kanpur instead. He officially launched the Kanpur edition on September 21, 1947. Later, his brother P. D. Gupta helped the paper grow in Madhya Pradesh. He started the Rewa edition in 1953 and the Bhopal edition in 1956.
As the years went by, the newspaper grew very fast across Uttar Pradesh. In 1975, it started a new edition in Gorakhpur. This caused a big fight with another newspaper called Aj. The two papers even had men fighting in the streets of Kanpur. They fought over who would control the offices and the delivery paths. Eventually, the two papers joined hands to work with the delivery workers.
In the 1990s, the paper began to move into even more places. It launched a Delhi edition in 1990 to help it become a national newspaper. It also started editions in Meerut, Agra, and Bareilly. The paper has faced many hard jobs and criticisms over its long history. Some people have accused it of spreading fake news or propaganda. However, it remains a massive part of how many people get their news every day.
Dainik Jagran is a major Indian daily newspaper published in the Hindi language. It is one of the most widely read publications in the world. In 2016, it was ranked as the fifth largest newspaper globally by circulation. By 2022, it had become the number one newspaper in India. In the fourth quarter of 2019, the Indian Readership Survey reported that it had 68.6 million readers.
The history of the newspaper began with its founder, Puran Chandra Gupta. He established the first version of the paper in 1942 in Jhansi. Before this, Gupta had served as a managing editor for a local magazine. During that time, he traveled to Bombay to secure advertising deals. This helped him build important contacts in the publishing industry. The publication was briefly suspended during the Quit India Movement of 1942. In 1946, Gupta planned to launch the paper in Lucknow, the capital of the United Provinces. However, he discovered that the newspapers National Herald and Pioneer were launching Hindi editions there. To avoid direct competition, he moved his machinery to Kanpur. The newspaper officially launched in Kanpur on September 21, 1947.
In its early years, the business faced many financial struggles. Gupta had to borrow money from his own family to stay in operation. He managed costs by using syndicates to buy articles at lower rates. He also accepted free article submissions from political activists seeking publicity. To find more revenue, Gupta traveled to metropolitan cities to sell advertisement space. He often hired reporters on a part-time basis during these trips. In the 1950s, his brother P. D. Gupta expanded the reach to Madhya Pradesh. He launched the Rewa edition in 1953 and the Bhopal edition in 1956. By 1956, the paper claimed a circulation of 21,000 copies across Uttar Pradesh and Vindhya Pradesh.
Expansion often led to intense competition between different news organizations. In 1975, Jagran launched an edition in Gorakhpur. This move caused a direct conflict with a newspaper called Aj. The Kanpur edition of Jagran had reached its regional limit and wanted to grow. The Gorakhpur market was being covered by the Varanasi-based Aj. This rivalry became very physical in the streets of Kanpur. Men hired by the two newspapers fought with batons and improvised firearms. They fought to control offices, territory, and distribution. The conflict also involved newspaper hawkers, who demanded higher commission rates. Eventually, the two newspapers joined forces to negotiate commission rates back down to a fixed 30%.
The period of the Emergency in India changed the newspaper industry significantly. During this time, there was a high demand for critical journalism. This allowed newspapers like Jagran and Aj to gain more market share. By 1977, the number of Hindi newspapers selling over 100,000 copies rose from three to over ten. This era transformed regional language papers into mass media. Following this, Jagran entered a period of rapid growth across Uttar Pradesh. It launched editions in Lucknow and Allahabad in 1979. It later expanded into Meerut in 1984, Agra in 1986, and Bareilly in 1989. In 1990, the newspaper launched a Delhi edition to pursue a national presence.
The newspaper has also faced significant controversy regarding its journalistic ethics. In December 1995, it published a story about Mayawati, a leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party. The story claimed she had an illegitimate daughter and used a derogatory slur against her. This caused great resentment among Dalit supporters. Protesters in Lucknow blockaded the newspaper office for a day. Many journalists and officials criticized the paper for sensationalist journalism. Judge P. B. Sawant and editor Prabash Joshi were among the critics. The newspaper's leadership defended the publication. They argued the fault lay with unethical political trends and western influences. Some journalists even held protests in defense of press freedom.
Today, the management of the newspaper has changed through generations. The second and third generations of the Gupta family have led the expansion. These newer leaders are often foreign-educated and focus on capital acquisition and partnerships. They use a strategy of increasing readership to attract more advertisers. This approach includes launching many different editions in various locations. This allows the newspaper to maintain its massive scale and influence. While the paper has faced accusations of spreading propaganda, it remains a dominant force in Indian media.
