Curriculum vitae

A curriculum vitae is a written summary of a person's professional life. It is often called a CV for short. The term comes from Neo-Latin. It translates to "the course of one's life."

This document is essential for career growth. It helps people apply for jobs, scholarships, and grants. It can also be used for bursaries. A CV tells an employer or a school about a person's education and skills. It serves as a primary tool for screening applicants before an interview.

In many English-speaking countries, a CV is typically a short document. It usually covers a maximum of two sides of A4 paper. The goal is to impress an employer with a quick summary. Because the format is not fixed, people can use it to show creativity. Most short CVs include several standard sections to stay organized. A heading provides a name, address, telephone number, and email address. The education history lists degrees earned and specialized training. A professional history section details relevant work or research experience. Finally, a section for research interests helps define the person's focus.

Terminology can change depending on where you live. In North America, the word résumé is very common. A résumé is a short career summary used for most jobs. In the United States, many people use CV and résumé interchangeably. However, there is a specific distinction in North American academia. In the U.S., a CV presents a full history of academic accomplishments. A résumé provides a concise summary of qualifications for other roles. Most non-academic employers in the U.S. prefer a one or two-page résumé. These documents must be easy to scan because employers rarely spend more than a few minutes reviewing them.

In the field of academia, the CV serves a much larger purpose. Academia refers to the world of higher education and research. Here, a CV is a comprehensive document. It is not just a summary but an extensive record of achievements. It includes detailed lists of publications, awards, and presentations. It also covers teaching experience and honors. Some academic CVs can become extremely long. For example, one academic CV reached 69 pages in length.

These long documents are required for academic positions and medical careers.

Modern technology has changed how people share these documents. In the 2010s, electronic versions became very popular. Applicants now send CVs via email or through employment websites. They also use job-oriented social-networking services like LinkedIn. This digital shift allows for easier sharing of professional information. It also allows employers to reach a wider pool of candidates quickly.

There is also a growing movement to change how academic CVs are written. Some research funding organizations now support a narrative format. A narrative CV focuses on the societal relevance of a person's work. It emphasizes how research, teaching, and outreach help the community. This approach moves away from simple lists toward a more descriptive style. In October 2024, the Government of Canada announced a new CV template. This change was made by major research councils known as NSERC, SSHRC, and CIHR. This new template allows for a free-form narrative personal statement. This follows similar trends in the US National Institutes of Health and UK Research and Innovation.

Understanding the language of the CV is also interesting. The term is a loanword from Neo-Latin. In the past, it was often spelled with a ligature, which is a joined character. The spelling "curriculum vitæ" was common but is now rare. When talking about many CVs, the plural is usually "curricula vitae." This follows traditional Latin rules. Some people mistakenly use "curricula vitarum," but dictionaries like Merriam-Webster and Oxford do not recognize this. Using the correct terminology helps maintain professional standards in global communication.
