Curriculum vitae

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A curriculum vitae is often called a CV. The name comes from Latin. It means "the course of one's life."

A CV is a written summary. It lists your jobs, school, and skills. In North America, many people call this a résumé.

People use a CV to get jobs. They also use them for school programs or grants. Most employers look at a CV to see if a person is right for the work. In the 2010s, many people began sending CVs by email. They also use websites like LinkedIn to share them.

In the United States, CVs and résumés can be different. A résumé is usually short. It is often only one or two pages. It is used for most jobs. A CV can be much longer. This is common in academia, which is the world of teaching and research. An academic CV lists many things. It includes awards, books, and research. One example of an academic CV is 69 pages long!

Some new CVs use a narrative style. This means they use a story to show how a person's work helps society.
