In some places, people call them fairy cakes or buns. These treats are special because they are easy to hold and decorate. You can top them with sweet frosting or icing. Many people also add colorful candy or fresh fruit on top. Some bakers even hide a tasty filling inside the cake. They might use a spoon to scoop a hole or a syringe to squirt in fruit or cream.

Making cupcakes is a fun process with many different steps. Most recipes use butter, sugar, eggs, and flour. Because they are small, they bake much faster than a large cake.

Many bakers use a metal pan with six or twelve small holes. To make them easy to remove, people use paper liners called cases. These liners help keep the cake moist and stay clean. Some liners are made of paper, thin aluminum foil, or silicone rubber. You can even bake a "cupcone" by putting the batter in an ice cream cone.

History shows us that cupcakes have changed a lot over time. The first written recipe for a small cake was in 1796. It was found in a book called American Cookery by Amelia Simmons. Later, in 1828, a book by Eliza Leslie used the name "cupcake." In the early 1800s, the name had two different meanings. Some people used the name because they baked cakes in pottery cups. Other people used the name because they measured ingredients with a cup. These recipes were sometimes called "1234 cakes" because they used specific amounts of ingredients.

There are many interesting facts about how cupcakes are used today. In 1908, a woman named Ida Freund used them to teach science. She made a periodic table of cupcakes for her students at Cambridge University.

These cupcakes showed the symbols for different elements. Today, you can buy cupcake kits for themed parties. These kits might have decorations of princesses, pirates, or dinosaurs.

Some shops even have a cupcake ATM that can hold 350 treats at once!

Cupcakes connect to many things you might already know. If you like science, you might recognize the periodic table. If you like movies, you might see cupcakes with Disney characters. They are even used to make art, like a basket of flowers. Some bakers arrange many cupcakes to look like a large turtle.

You can also find them in many different forms. Some people make "cake pops," which are round balls of cake covered in chocolate. It is amazing how such a small treat can bring so much joy.
