language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A bun is a small and round type of bread. You can easily hold it in your hand to eat. People around the world see buns in different ways. In England, Scotland, and Wales, a bun is like a sweet cake. In Scotland, these are very rich and full of spices. A currant bun is a famous example of this. In the United States, people might call them rolls. A roll often holds a burger and is cut in half.

Making a bun starts with mixing a special dough. This dough usually uses flour, milk, and yeast. Some recipes also add small amounts of sugar or butter. To make a sweet bun, cooks add more sugar and butter. Sometimes they even add an egg to the mix. Many buns have fruit or nuts tucked inside. You might find them filled with jam or cream. Some have icing or caramel on top.

Cooks use a clever trick to make buns look nice. They often brush the tops with egg yolk. This gives the bun a bright, golden appearance. This makes the bread look very tasty. In China, people make buns called baozi. These can have savory or sweet fillings inside. They are a very popular kind of bun.

We do not know exactly where the word bun began. The Oxford English Dictionary found an early use in 1371. It was part of a law called the Assize of Bread and Ale. Back then, the word was spelled "bunne." The meaning of the word was considered doubtful. It likely just meant a type of loaf or cake.

Buns have been eaten for a very long time. In the 14th century, Buddhists in Japan ate steamed buns. These buns were stuffed with vegetables or a sweet treat called yōkan. In Europe, people ate spiced buns in the 16th century. They often served these buns with sweet wines or ale. These buns were even part of funeral customs. Buns are a tasty part of many different cultures.
