It looks like long, thin sticks. These are called prisms. They can be very shiny. Most sticks are 10 to 20 mm long. Some can reach 100 mm. The color is a bright red. It can also look like a hyacinth. This mineral is made of lead chromate. It is the same thing as chrome yellow paint.

Crocoite is hard to find. It needs a special way to form. First, lead ore must be in an oxidation zone. This is a place where air and water change things. Then, it needs chromium from certain rocks. When these parts mix, crocoite grows.

Many places have crocoite. It is found in Brazil and Germany. It is also in the Philippines. Tasmania has the best crocoite. The Adelaide Mine is a very famous spot. This mine is a top source for the world. Crocoite is the official mineral of Tasmania. Some pieces are even in the Smithsonian Museum.
