In the Hebrew Bible, people speak about special bonds called covenants. A covenant is a serious agreement between two sides. The Hebrew word for this is "bĕriyth." This word comes from a root meaning "to cut." In ancient times, people made these pacts by passing between cut pieces of animal sacrifice.

There are different ways these agreements work. Some are called obligatory covenants. These involve two sides that have equal standing. Other agreements are called promissory covenants. These are more like a royal grant from a master to a servant. In these cases, the master can reward a servant for being loyal. God rewarded people like Noah, Abraham, and David through these promises.

One famous agreement is the Noahic Covenant found in Genesis 9. This promise is for all living creatures on Earth. God promised never to destroy all life with a flood again. He used the rainbow as a sign of this everlasting bond.

In this specific case, some scholars say there are no obligations for humans. It is seen as a promise made by God alone.

God also made several promises to Abraham in the book of Genesis. One promise was to make Abraham a great nation. Another promise gave his descendants land from the river of Egypt to the Euphrates.

Abraham showed his commitment through actions like migrating to a new land. He also performed a ritual called circumcision. This served as a physical token of the covenant. Some stories say his descendants would be as many as the stars.

Other covenants involve laws and rules for people to follow. The Mosaic covenant is an example of this. Some believe that obeying the law is the same as obeying God. These ideas helped bring different tribes together into one group.

Today, different people have different views on these bonds. Some see them as one big story, while others see many separate promises. These ancient ideas still help people understand faith and history.
