In the Hebrew Bible, people talk about special promises. These are called covenants. A covenant is a bond between two sides.

The word for covenant comes from a root that means "to cut." This is because people used to make pacts with animal sacrifices.

One major covenant was with Noah. God promised never to destroy all life with a flood again. He used a rainbow as a sign of this promise.

This promise was for all living things on Earth.

God also made promises to Abraham. He promised to make Abraham's family a great nation. He said his descendants would be as many as the stars.

One part of this was a ritual called circumcision. This served as a sign of the bond.

Some covenants were about rules. Others were like gifts from a king to a servant. Many people study these different types of promises today.
