Cotylorhynchus was a massive animal that lived a long time ago.

It lived during the late Lower Permian period. This was in areas we now call Texas and Oklahoma. This animal was a herbivore, which means it ate plants.

It is known as a caseid synapsid. This group of animals is very important for studying early life. Because many fossils were found, it is the best-known member of its group.

Its body had a very special shape. The body was huge and shaped like a big barrel. This wide shape was likely used to hold very large intestines. These large intestines helped the animal digest many plants. These plants might have had low nutritional value.

The animal had a very small head compared to its body. Its snout sloped forward toward the front. It also had very large openings for its nose. Its limbs were short and very strong. The hands and feet had broad fingers with powerful, curved claws.

Scientists have studied many different parts of this animal. The name Cotylorhynchus comes from Greek words meaning "cup" and "snout."

This name describes a cup-shaped bony surface around the nose. The teeth were also very interesting. Some teeth in the upper jaw were long and slender. Other teeth were shaped like small spoons. Many teeth had tiny bumps called cuspules on them. These teeth helped the animal process the plants it ate.

Many fossils have been found in places like Oklahoma.

In 1937, a scientist named J. Willis Stovall named the species Cotylorhynchus romeri. He named it to honor the paleontologist Alfred Sherwood Romer. Many specimens were found near the town of Norman. There were about 40 individuals found in that area. Another species, Cotylorhynchus hancocki, was named in 1953. This species was much larger than the others. It could reach a length of over 6 meters.

Learning about Cotylorhynchus helps us see how early life worked. It shows how animals adapted to eat different plants. We can see how their bodies changed to fit their food. Some scientists think they lived mostly on land. Others think they might have spent time in the water.

Even today, scientists are still studying these fossils. A study from 2022 suggested some species might belong to different groups. This shows that science is always growing and changing.
