society Maturity 13-18 Next article →

People use a special way to make big choices. This way is called cost-benefit analysis. It helps people see if a plan is worth the money.

A French man named Jules Dupuit helped start this idea. He studied projects like roads and bridges. He found it easy to count the cost. You just add up the price of tools and work. But finding the benefit is harder. He looked at how much people would pay to use a road. This helped show the value to society.

Later, the United States used this tool for big jobs. The Corps of Engineers used it for water projects. In 1939, a law said benefits must be more than costs. This helped make it a rule for the government.

Today, people use this for many things. They use it for schools and for protecting the land. They even use it for computer safety. It can help decide if a new law is good. However, it is not always perfect. It can be hard to know all future costs. Some groups may even try to change the numbers. Still, it helps us pick the best path.
