Valuation (finance)

society Maturity 13-18 Next article →

People need to know what things are worth. This is called valuation. Experts use it to find a fair price. They do this for many things. They might value a whole company. They might value a single stock or a bond. Some things are hard to price. For example, data is a valuable asset today. Other assets, like patents, are also important.

There are three main ways to find value. The first way is called discounted cash flow. This looks at future money. It uses a rule called the time value of money. This rule says money today is worth more than money later. The second way is relative valuation. This compares an asset to similar ones. Experts look at market prices for these other items. The third way is contingent claim valuation. This is used for special items like stock options.

Valuation helps people make big choices. It is used for taxes and business deals. It helps during a divorce or when making a will. People use it to see if a price is too high or too low. This helps them decide to buy or sell.
