A cooling tower is a device used to reject waste heat into the air.

Many machines, like those in power plants or oil refineries, get very hot. To keep working well, they must move this heat away using a coolant. Usually, this coolant is a stream of water.

The tower cools the water so it can be used again. This process is very important for many industries. Without it, machines might get too hot to function.

There are two main ways these towers work. Many towers use evaporative cooling to remove heat. In these towers, warm water is sprayed or trickled through the structure. As the water turns into mist and evaporates, it carries the heat away.

This cools the remaining water to a lower temperature. Other towers use dry cooling instead. These do not use evaporation. Instead, they use radiators to cool the liquid using only air.

Cooling towers began in the 19th century. They were created to help condensers work better with steam engines. Condensers use cool water to turn steam back into liquid. This helps save fuel and makes engines more powerful. In the early 1900s, engineers found ways to recycle water in cities.

One famous design was a hyperboloid tower. Dutch engineers Frederik van Iterson and Gerard Kuypers patented this shape in 1916. The first reinforced concrete version was built in 1917 in Heerlen. Later, the first UK versions appeared in 1924 at Liverpool.

These towers come in many different sizes. Some are tiny units on the roofs of hospitals or malls.

These help with air conditioning systems, also called HVAC. Larger industrial towers are used at massive power stations. A large coal plant might circulate 71,600 cubic meters of water every hour.

Some towers are even shaped like giant chimneys. The tallest cooling tower is at the Pingshan II Power Station in China. These large structures are often called hyperboloid towers.

It is easy to see how cooling towers link to our daily lives. You might see a large tower and think it is blowing smoke.

However, the white mist is actually just water vapor. This is the same thing you see when you breathe on a cold day. Cooling towers also help protect nature. By cooling water in a tower, we avoid dumping hot water into rivers. This keeps the water at a safe temperature for fish and other living things.
