A fan is a powered machine that creates airflow.

It uses rotating blades to act on the air. These blades are often made of plastic, metal, or wood. The part that holds the blades is called a hub. Together, the blades and the hub are known as an impeller or a rotor. Most fans are kept inside a housing or a case. This case helps direct the air and keeps people safe. It prevents objects from touching the spinning blades.

Fans work by moving a large volume of air at low pressure. This is different from a compressor, which moves less air at high pressure. Most fans use electric motors to spin the blades. However, some use handcranks, hydraulic motors, or internal combustion engines. When air hits a blade, the blade will often rotate. This is how devices like wind turbines work too. Fans are used for many jobs. They can dry things, remove dust, or provide a draft for a fire.

People have used fans for thousands of years. In ancient Egypt, servants used fans for important figures. In ancient India, people used handheld fans made of bamboo. Around 180 CE, a craftsman named Ding Huan made a large rotary fan. It had seven wheels and was 3 meters wide. In the 1600s, scientists like Robert Boyle studied airflow. Later, in 1727, John Theophilus Desaguliers used a fan to clear air from coal mines. In 1849, William Brunton built a huge steam-driven fan in Wales.

Electric fans changed how we live. Schuyler Wheeler invented an electric fan between 1882 and 1886. In 1882, Philip Diehl made the first electric ceiling fan. By 1909, KDK of Japan began making many electric fans for homes. In the 1930s, Emerson designed a famous fan called the "Silver Swan." By the 1940s, Crompton Greaves in India became a very large manufacturer. In 1998, William Fairbank and Walter K. Boyd invented the high-volume low-speed fan. These fans use long blades to move air using less energy.

It is interesting to note that fans do not actually cool the air. Instead, they help people feel cooler through evaporative cooling. This happens when the moving air helps sweat evaporate from your skin. This carries heat away from your body. Fans also help machines like computers stay cool. They blow hot air out so that cooler air can flow in.

Without fans, many machines would get too hot to work. They are a very important part of our modern world.
