Some people do jobs for a short time. This is called contingent work. These workers do not have permanent jobs. They might work part-time or only when needed. They are often called freelancers or temps.

Long ago, most people worked on farms. During the Industrial Revolution, people worked in big mills. These workers often worked twelve-hour shifts. They were paid for each piece they made. Workers had very little power back then. Later, people formed trade unions. These groups worked together to make laws fairer.

Today, many companies use contingent workers. This helps companies save money. It also helps them find experts for special tasks. This is common in a knowledge-driven economy. This means companies need people with very specific skills.

However, this work can be hard. In 2015, many contract workers died from job injuries. This can happen because they lack training. They may also fear losing their jobs if they speak up. Both the staffing agency and the host company must keep them safe.
