Many people in this group have very little money. They often struggle to find steady jobs. This can make it hard to get what they need. In 1998, one study said this group made up about 12% of U.S. homes.

Where people live is also important. Many members of the underclass live in the same city areas. These places often have high poverty. This can make people feel cut off from the rest of society. Some experts say this isolation makes life even tougher.

People study these groups to understand their lives. Some look at money and jobs. Others look at how people act or think. Some even look at how schools and cities work. By studying these facts, people try to find ways to fix these problems and help others.
