Long ago, Sweden was not one single country. Instead, many small groups lived there. Two main groups were the Swedes and the Geats.

Some people think these groups joined together a long time ago. A Roman writer named Tacitus wrote about a tribe called the Suiones. This was in the first or second century AD. But many modern historians are not so sure about this. They say we do not have enough proof from that time.

Other stories say the groups joined through wars. One old story tells of a king named Ingjald. He lived in the 7th century. He was said to have fought other small kings to take control.

Most experts look at a different time. They point to a king named Olof Skötkonung. He ruled around the year AD 1000. He is the first king we know for sure ruled both the Swedes and the Geats. This helped the different parts of the land become one kingdom. This change was a slow process that took many years.
